Florida Finishing Hydro-Graphics Base Coat / Clear Coat

Below is helpful information when deciding on a Base Coat color, and a Clear Coat gloss value. The Florida Finishing staff is trained to make appropriate suggestions on Base Coat and Clear Coat selection in the event that you are in the planning stages of your project.

Hydro-Graphics Base Coat Selection

The Base Coat is applied after pre-treatment to ensure adhesion. Florida Finishing will indicate the recommended Background Color as defined by the Film Pattern. However, with some Film Patterns it is possible to change the background color (Base Coat) and create a unique look. This is very helpful when developing a "BRAND", without going through the cost and time to create a CUSTOM FILM PATTERN.

Most Colors are defined using systems such as, but not limited to; (PMS) Pantone Matching System, Federal 595, and of course any Sherwin Williams Color Deck.
Further, if you choose to submit a sample for color matching. Florida Finishing can scan your sample using a Spectrometer, and in most cases match your requirements in both color and gloss value.

Be sure to tell us what your intended use or application will be for Finished and/or Decorated parts. Florida Finishing will use the BEST Coating Formulation for the customer based on the intended end use.

The base coat is applied after the primer coat. This coat contains the visual properties of color and effects, and is usually the one referred to as the paint. The base coat is mainly divided into two categories, solid and metallic.

Hydro-Graphics Clear Coat Selection

Florida Finishing Clear coat paint refers to the clear (non-pigmented) top coat paint that is applied over a decorated or colored base coat paint and forms the final interface with the environment. It is found on most exterior devices built in recent years, and is designed to increase the base coat's durability. Clear Coat also maintains the Gloss Level and resistance to harmful UV and environmental effects.

Florida Finishing's Clear coats are durable enough to resist normal abrasion, and chemically stable enough to withstand UV light exposure commonly found in the southern United States.

A Word about Clear Coat Gloss Value

FLAT CLEAR COAT is between: UNITS @ 1 MIL / DFT
SEMI-GLOSS CLEAR COAT is between: UNITS @ 1 MIL / DFT
FULL GLOSS CLEAR COAT is between: UNITS @ 1 MIL / DFT

The gloss meter provides a quantifiable way of measuring gloss intensity ensuring consistency of measurement by defining the precise illumination and viewing conditions. The configuration of both illumination source and observation reception angles allows measurement over a small range of the overall reflection angle. The measurement results of a gloss meter are related to the amount of reflected light from a black glass standard with a defined refractive index. The ratio of reflected to incident light for the specimen, compared to the ratio for the gloss standard, is recorded as gloss units (GU).
Measurement angle refers to the angle between the incident and reflected light. Three measurement angles (20°, 60°, and 85°) are specified to cover the majority of industrial coatings applications. The angle is selected based on the anticipated gloss range, as shown in the following table.
